The Gemmy Connect Journey: Building Africa's Payment & Financial Future

Where It All Started

Every great company starts with a story. Ours begins in early 2025, in a small co-working space in Kigali's Norrsken House, with a team of four builders who saw something that nobody else seemed to notice: Africa's digital economy was exploding — fintech startups across the continent raised $769 million in equity in 2025 alone — but the infrastructure needed to power it was fragmented, complex, and inaccessible to most businesses.

We set out to build more than just a payment API. Our vision was bigger than that. We wanted to build a unified financial ecosystem for Africa — one that connects businesses to any payment method while also teaching people how to earn, save, and invest.

Building the Foundation

The early days were intense. Our team spent months building integrations with mobile money operators across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and beyond. We slept on couches, rewrote entire codebases after discovering we had designed them wrong, and learned the hard way that every African market operates differently. What works in Lagos does not work in Nairobi. What works in Nairobi does not work in Accra. We had to build for all of them, or we were building for none of them.

We launched our private beta in mid-2025 with a handful of businesses. Our first customer was a small e-commerce store in Kigali that wanted to accept MTN MoMo payments. When that first payment went through — a modest $12 for a pair of sandals — we celebrated like we had just processed a million dollars.

Key Milestones

Q3 2025: Connected to MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and Orange Money — three of the largest mobile money networks on the continent, which collectively serve over 100 million users. Each integration required navigating different APIs, documentation that was sometimes incomplete, and regulatory requirements that changed from country to country.

Q4 2025: Expanded beyond mobile money to support Visa, Mastercard, and local bank transfers. Launched the first version of our in-app financial education modules. We discovered that many of our merchants' customers were making their first-ever digital payment through our platform — which meant we had a responsibility to teach them how to use it safely.

2026: Today, Gemmy Connect processes payments for thousands of businesses and reaches millions with financial education content across multiple African markets. Our team has grown from 4 to 30 people. We have moved out of the co-working space into our own office — still in Kigali, still in Norrsken House, but with a door that has our name on it.

What is Next

The next phase includes cross-border payments, lending infrastructure, and expanded market coverage. We are building tools that will let a business in Lagos pay a supplier in Nairobi as easily as paying one down the street. We are building credit scoring that understands an African entrepreneur's real financial history, not what a foreign credit bureau model thinks it should look like.

Gemmy Connect exists to connect Africa — to build the financial infrastructure AND the financial knowledge that enables businesses to serve customers anywhere, and individuals to build wealth anywhere. We started with four people and a vision. We are building the rest together.
